We live in a world where technology runs rampant and information seems to jump from one computer to the next. Daily, there are new devices that are slimmer, faster and smarter than the one you bought a week ago! I can’t even log onto my computer without some update signal stating “such and such has been updated, please re-boot your system.” Can you relate?
In this technological culture that we live in its hard to keep up with the fast pace of things. But eventually it flows into our everyday lives and we find ourselves expecting things to be quicker, faster, and easier than the last time we used them. We want our food fast, our shopping convenient, and answers at the click of a button. While these can be good things, there is a downside because these concepts have not only crept into our every day lives but they have crept into our spiritual lives as well…
Our Bible reading has become quick, our prayer time cut short and our time with God is only when it is convenient. We’ll spend minutes with God then get mad at him when he didn’t answer. We want, technically speaking, a spiritual convenient store with everything at a moments notice. But what we fail to realize is that without the stocker there would be nothing on the shelves. God can stock the shelves of the convenient store but he doesn’t want you to just walk out with the food and set it aside, he wants you to eat it, savor it and enjoy it. To spend time with the Nugget he has given you.
So this week will you sit, with me, in his presence, mediate on His word, and here what He has to say? God wants to be alone with us and he wants to speak to us. Not just for a few minutes a day, He wants more. He wants us to draw near to Him. James 4:8 says, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” You see this requires an active move on our part, to draw near to God. Then, as we draw near, He promises to draw near back. Not only does he promise that, but he promises that when we do read His Word he will also do these things….
John 8:31-32, “If you continue in my Word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” RSV
Joshua 1:8, ” Don’t stop reading this book of the Law, but day and night think of what it says, so you can be careful to do everything written in it; then you will prosper and succeed.”
You will prosper and succeed if you read His Word. Not financial prosperity but Spiritual prosperity….which is far greater!
Acts 20:32, “And now I entrust you to God and his care and to his wonderful words that are able to build your faith and give you all the inheritance of those who are set apart for himself.”
John 6:63, ” It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.” NKJV
Romans 15:4, “And the Scriptures were written to teach and encourage us by giving us hope.”
No matter how old, worn out, or torn up your Bible might be, it is going to outshine all other resources you might have. So lets focus on reading it together!
