A Distinguished Yet Captivating Song

“Mommy, Mommy!” shouted my nine-year old daughter as she ran up to me with joy written all over her face. “I have a song I wrote, just for you.”

My daughters smile extended from ear to ear as she explained how long it took her to write the song and how excited she was to share it. For she had been working on it all day, as a surprise, just for me.

I sat in anticipation, filled with joy and excitement, knowing that my little girl was about to do something great. My little girl, who is not the most talented singer in the world, yet hear she is, ready to pour her heart and soul into a song written just for me. What joy, what love, and I couldn’t wait to hear it!

She then proceeded to the center of the room, composed herself, stuck her chest up high and with one deep breath, out poured the words to the most captivating song, “I love you mom… you love me….you’re the best mom ever…”

This was the most distinguished, screeching, yet the most beautifully affectionate song I’d ever heard. She was singing from the heart and although a bit obscure, the words were as precious to me as gold. I felt as if a thousand needles had saturated my body all at once and tears of joy began to roll down my cheeks. It was amazing!

Then God spoke in his still small voice and said, “Elissa, will you sing to me like that? Sing me a new song, from your heart?”

Wow, I was hit like a ton of bricks. You see, I am probably one of the worst singers in the world, yet here the Lord was asking me to sing, screeching sounds and all, as my daughter sang to me. She sang out of pure love for me and God wants us to sing out of pure love for him. He doesn’t care what we sound like or how good or bad our words are. What he wants is us to pour out our hearts to him and at times to just sing him a new song. Not one that we have heard others sing, although he likes that too, but he wants to hear from us. He wants  to hear a song, that we’ll sing just for him, one that we created.

You see, if my daughters song brought me to tears, how much more than is our Lord brought joy by our songs?

So this week I wanted to encourage you to sit down in a quite spot and sing a song before the Lord. Sing a new song, not one that you have heard before, a new one, sung from the heart.  You don’t have to write it out or put thought to it, just sit at His feet and sing what comes to mind. You’ll be blessed!

“He has put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God.” Psalm 40:3

“Sing to Yahweh a song that is new, His praise from the end of the earth…” Isaiah 42:10

Love you all!!

  1. I love this post Elissa! As a new mom I look forward to having stories like this to share, and more importantly I hope my daughter will love to praise our Mighty King!! As a praise and worship leader I battled with severe stage fright, stemming from feelings of inadequacy and being too concerned with what other people thought. I’m so thankful that the Lord used my mentor to give me a God-awakening, helping me to realize how much HE LOVES TO HEAR ME PRAISE!! Now, as much as possible, I am only focused on what my Father thinks, imagining me honoring him before the throne. Continue praising him and know that your song is a sweet, sweet sound to His ears!!

  2. Singing is one of my favorite ways to worship! I have the privilege of leading hundreds of people in worship every few weeks. I love seeing people raise hands and voices to God in a corporate worship setting. But worship alone in the quiet with Him is even more beautiful. Thank you for the reminder:)

  3. Such a beautiful and heartfelt post! In a worship session post, a few weeks ago I made a request unto the Lord. I thought of this request almost immediately, as I read your post! “An instrument of worship and praise, LORD, is what I long to be. Allow Your Spirit to sing through me, a new song unto Thee.”It is truly my heart’s desire, to sing a NEW song unto the Lord. Not just a new song, but new songs unto Him! Thank you for sharing such a wonderful confirmation, of my heartfelt sentiments, as well as what the Lord desires of us! A portion of one of the Psalms came to mind: “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands!” It’s not about how we sound, but it is about the contents of our hearts as we sing! God bless you!

    • Wow! Praise God for that! And thanks for sharing it, as it is a blessing to hear!

For we will both, “make a joyful noise unto the Lord!” 🙂 Take care my blogger friend.

  4. Hmmmm Elissa, I’m sorry but I’m very sure my singing voice is the worst, even my dogs get distressed when I sing, they howl or want to lick me better. But I will compromise, mine is the worst in Australia, yours in America, now that’s settled, thank you for the great message and I agree the sound that God hears, is our heart melody of Love.

The Lord gave me a Song ( see below ) when I first started my Journey with Him as an Adult 30 years ago after being and Atheist in my head most of the rest of my life, except for a few years as a child, I’m 60 now. The words of the Song which also has a wonderful message that goes with it remain a testimony in my heart of His Love, Mercy, Compassion and Patience for a woman who walked in confusion and fear for many years.

    Something Beautiful:

    Something beautiful
    Something good
    All my confusion, He understood
All I had to offer Him was brokeness and strife
But He made something beautiful of my life

Regardless of what my circumstances are, good or bad, in Jesus my life is beautiful, even my singing voice.

Christian Love from both of us – Anne.

  6. I will sing praises to you night and day
I will speak truth with every breath you pass my way
I will love you everday and follow your command
I will put my trust in you and not in man.

Whoa that felt really good to just let it flow and not put much thought into it. Thank you, sometimes we get caught up in pre-existing songs but we can sing from our heart with our own melodies. It does not matter how off beat it is it is real music to God. Amen.

  7. And when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things which He did, and the children crying in the temple, and saying, Hosanna to the Son of David, they were angry. And they said to Him, Do you hear what these say? And Jesus said to them, Yes, have you never read, “Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings You have perfected praise?” We all need to come to God in the same manner your daughter came to you.
    (Mat 21:15-16 MKJV)

  8. On 04/12/2012, as I was listening to worship in my car, I saw a vision of a small group of people with their eyes looking heavenward and their hands stretched towards heaven. I saw a fire resting on the hands on the hands of those worshiping. The Lord said that when hands are clean and hearts are fully committed the sacrifice of praises and worship is acceptable to Him and His eyes roam throughout the earth looking for such a people.

    • Wow!! What a beautiful picture of reverential worship. I can see the image in my mind. Thank you so much for sharing it with me. As it was a blessing to here and one that will stick with me. 🙂
