DEBUNKED! God won’t Give Us More Than We Can Handle

WMM

I once knew a women who maneuvered her way through a very difficult situation. Her husband divorced her and left her for another woman. Sadly, he left behind four children, and the young woman was left to tend to them alone. She was a stay at home mom prior to her husbands betrayal, which meant she didn’t have a job or the money to care for her family. She then proceeded into the workforce to find a job, however, in the process she tragically injured her back. She was left with no husband, no job, no money, and excruciating back pain. The pain became so dreadful that there were times she could not walk, let alone take care of her family.

This sweet woman was a dear friend of mine, and I remember coming over to her house on many occasions because she could not physically do things on her own due to the injured discs in her back.

Life was at a standstill for my dear friend. She couldn’t help her children, she couldn’t get a job, she couldn’t move about, her life was in shambles! But some of the most agonizing words I ever heard uttered came from her during that time. She said, “If God doesn’t give you more than you can handle, then how come I can’t handle this? I’m dying inside!” With that she wept uncontrollably.

I never forgot the words she shared with me that day. But I couldn’t imagine being in her shoes either. Nor, could I help but wonder if God really was giving her more than she could handle. She was, after all, living a nightmare! It just didn’t add up!

I thought about the words, “God doesn’t give you more than you can handle.” Over and over again in my head, and knew something had to be wrong with this cliché saying. So I decided to look up the Scripture, and here is what I found…

“No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.” 1 Corinthians 10:13

Nowhere in this Scripture does it state that God will give you more than you can ‘handle!’ It’s not implied, nor should it be! It says, “God will not TEMP you [with temptations] more than you are able.”

According to Merriam Webster’s Dictionary Temptation is: A strong urge or desire to have or do something, and especially something that is bad, wrong, or unwise.

Would you call injuring your back, the death of a loved one, a health issue, cancer, or losing your job something that you desired to have or something that you caused unwisely? The answer is a gigantic NO!

Better yet, if we are supposed to have a ‘way of escape’ as the verse above implies, what would our ‘way of escape’ be from such things? If a love one dies what is the ‘way of escape?’ I can’t think of one! However, if we sin, we are tempted, and thus have the option to ‘escape’. Here is what I mean. Lets say in your past, you were an alcoholic. A friend temps you to have a drink of beer. At that point you have a choice to make, drink the beer or not. Your way of escape would be to not drink the beer. Or you can choose to indulge in the sin. With sin there are always options. You can choose to sin, or not. It’s your choice. With life situations, they are beyond us. We can’t control or choose a way of escape in such situations.

All these years people have gone around saying the cliché, “God will not give you more than you can handle.” And it’s a lie! I’m guilty too. I’ve said it to many people before and sadly, I’ve said it to my dear friend above. It’s so wrong! God never said he wouldn’t give you more than you can handle; nor did he say your life situations will be bearable.  He said, he will not temp you with temptations to sin, beyond what you are able. If this is not evidence enough for you listen to what Paul says in the verse below…

“We think you ought to know, dear brothers and sisters, about the trouble we went through in the province of Asia. We were crushed and overwhelmed beyond our ability to endure, and we thought we would never live through it. In fact, we expected to die.” 2 Corinthians 1:8

Even Paul was burdened beyond his ability to endure! It’s right there in the Scriptures! If Paul was burdened beyond his ability, don’t you think we too can be burdened beyond our ability to endure? I believe so!

Now that this cliché has been debunked, we are left with one question: If God DOES give us more than we can handle, then how are we to handle life situations? Now that is the question!

The answer, is found in the verse above following Paul’s cry to God that he was unable to endure.

“But as a result, we stopped relying on ourselves and learned to rely only on God, who raises the dead.” 2 Corinthians 1:9

Paul says as a result of him being unable to endure, he learned to stop relying on himself and start relying on God! This is exactly what we need to do in such situations. If you lost a loved one, have a health issue, have cancer, lost a job, lost a child, whatever situation you are going through, rely on God, rely on His Strength. Because with God, we can endure all things! Not of our own accord, but with God!  Learn to rely on his strength, rather than your own.  For God WILL GIVE you more than you can handle, BUT we must rely on his strength when going through such situations. Because with God all things are possible!

In closing I want to say that I did clear things up with my friend. Once she found out that God did give her more than she could handle; her life changed! It was like a huge weight had lifted from her shoulders! She then understood what God meant and I am here to testify of the great things God did in her life since then. She understood that God was there with her helping her through the situation and not expecting her to ‘handle it on her own.’ We need to speak truth in such situations; especially when people are going through difficult things.

Love you all!

  1. I read your title with delight — I’m so glad someone finally debunked this statement! I’ve never used it in the way people do, because I don’t believe it. Life flattens some people. At the same time, this statement places the blame of everything bad on God.

Did God take away this woman’s husband? Did He injure this lady’s back so she’d be helpless? Various circumstances of life come to us all, through satanic activity, through the weakness of someone else’s flesh or our own, through situations in the workplace or just not being careful enough. If I’m cutting firewood and cut off my hand with a chain saw, did God “give me” that trial?

Your conclusion is sound. In all things we can look to Him for strength so we don’t lose it and go jump off a bridge. No one is justified in taking their own life or “drowning their sorrows” because of situations; God would provide the strength to bear up under them if they’d turn to Him.

    • I know there are alot of them, sadly! Another one is, “God Helps Those Who Help Themselves.” I’ve heard that one quoted before too! And we all know that’s not the case.

  2. very well put….! I have found in my life that I usually don’t discover that I am able to endure…until after a situation. But now I know that while I don’t often understand how I can endure….God is carrying me through until I can understand. God allowed satan to attack Job only because God was sure of how faithful Job was…..and even then, satan was told not to take his life…..

  3. Hi Elissa, thank you for sharing this Truth, I have known for a long time that the Scripture confirming that God does not give us more then we can handle is referring to Temptation, it was good you decided to look it up.

God also does not ever give anyone more then they can handle because it is not Him who willingly afflicts us m or allows us to suffer, life happens or we sin or others do and so we get hurt … I just shared with Darrell on his Blog what God said to me in my heart yesterday and perhaps you will understand better why I just said what I did if I share it with you too but we also remember Jesus said in this world we will have trouble but He did not say He will cause it, but He did say He will be there when we are afflicted, so let’s look at who does cause suffering first and then I will share what happened to me yesterday.

1 John 5:19 We know that we are of God, and that the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.

Yesterday my Mobility Scooter after the brakes failed took off and ploughed into a tree, bruised and in much pain again with this being 3 times in a month that I have been hurt seriously from falls and also what was worse emotionally too, when someone abused me recently in the worst way possible, they claimed God deliberately hurt me to show He is not close to me or there for me.

But how amazing that our Awesome God tells us …. come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. God will listen to us, it takes my breath away to know it’s True, so I talked to my Abba Father and this is what He said in my heart…..

Would I ever tell my Children whom I Love greatly that I’m not there for them or that I afflict them willingly to show that I’m not or to force them to submit to my will, they may push me away through there sin and indifference but I do NOT ever do this. He gave me His Truth below to hold onto when my life fell apart and I have shared it often and will continue to do so until people stop blaming God for the evil that happens to them, He is Love and can do no evil or does He allow it willingly. Would anyone deliberately plan to hurt the Children they Love, if they do then they don’t know what the Rod of Correction really is or how God disciplines us in Love and for Love.

Lamentations 3: 33 For He doth not afflict willingly nor grieve the children of men.

Isaiah 43:1-3 – Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you by name; you are mine. When you go through deep waters and great trouble, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown! When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you. For I am the LORD, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour.”

Jeremiah 29 :11-12 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.

  4. P.S One thing that is very misunderstood is what happened to Job, although God knew He would keep him strong to the end, Satan like with us had the right to put Job to the test but God will always protect our soul and give us the strength to endure as He did with Job and also keep us strong to the end and this is His promise and He never breaks a promise.

We remember Paul and Silas in prison, believe me they were not happy clappy but who came and comforted them later, when we can Praise God from the heart after times of testing and affliction, it is The Holy Spirit who is keeping our spirits soaring but it is not always straight away, suffering is never pleasant that is why God gave us emotions and tears and we are to cry with those who are hurting and help carry their load and God keeps their tears in the vessel of His heart and turns then into Tears of Joy…. That’s His Promise!

    Blessings – Anne.

    • Thats correct! Many disciples went through trials and tribulations, all the the twelve disciples for example. But praise God! Who helped them through it all. And gave them the strength to prevail! He gave the endurance they needed. They were expected to handle it on their own! And I LOVE how God puts our tears in his vessel!! His love is amazing!

      • Oh so very True dear Ellisa, His Love is amazing, we just have to read the Scripture to see how Awesome He is and we can see it in Creation, but people at the time of Job and sadly some even today, believed everything that happened was from the hand of God, good and bad, although The Holy Spirit was working in their lives, Pentecost had not come so He was not indwelling them, we see this in other parts of the Old Hebrew Testerment when it says God sent a storm etc yes because He created all things inderectly it was by His hand but He is not the creator of evil, even the world wide flood was an act of Love and mercy, as you said it’s Satan who afflicts us, he uses God’s creation for evil and his followers are also evil but He can never have the victory in the lives of God’s children who He has known from the begining, Jesus is our Armour, and the only time we have to fear God is when we do evil, because without heart repentance, we will reap what we sow untill we come to our senses like the Prodical son did and when we do Wow what a party :-D.

  5. If God never gave us more than we could handle, well he wouldn’t give us much of anything. I completely agree with your well-stated conclusions. I have several posts on my blog under the tag of “What the Bible does NOT say,” because of all the clever quips and cultural wisdom that get projected onto the Bible. Thanks!

  6. Elissa… I got it right this time, Sorry I was half asleep last night it was after two in the morning but how good that God never sleeps and He never spells our name wrong!

Elissa I want like you very much to help those who are in confusion with what the Will of God is and ALWAYS was, why did Jesus come to earth and what happened, God tells us for He so Loved the World, that He sent Jesus His only Son, Why! we see in this Parable below and what happened when He did, I will just share part of it with you but reading it has a whole will bring more light as you may have already found out.

Luke 20:13 -15 The Owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my beloved Son; perhaps they will respect Him.’ But when the vine-growers saw Him, they reasoned with one another, saying, ‘This is the Heir; let us kill Him so that the inheritance will be ours.’ So they threw Him out of the vineyard and killed Him. NASB

What was and is God’s WILL, it is to save mankind from perishing which means Eternal separation from Him, He had created us so we could be with Him always, it broke His heart when Satan won the right to control the world with evil, it breaks His heart to see us hurting, Jesus cried! He was known as a man of sorrow and aquatinted with grief… Elissa are you Happy Clappy to see all the suffering around the world, even what your friend experienced, would you deliberately want to cause her more, to willingly allow her to be hurt again and again, is that your will is that God’s. It is not God’s Will!

God knew unless we were redeemed and brought back we would suffer Eternally, Jesus knew that accepting to carry our sin and to be our Redeemer would mean He would be separated from His beloved Father, they had always been One in Spirit, He was conceived by The Holy Spirit… Father why has though forsaken me….. Jesus became fully Human on the cross, Good and evil cannot co-exist, God’s Will was and has ALWAYS been to SAVE US, Jesus Will in the Garden was the same that is why He went through so much anguish, He didn’t want be separated from His Father but He knew God’s heart would be broken completely to loose us eternally to the evil one and so would His, He chose to die for us and so He was ripped away from His Father even a second would have been agonising for BOTH OF THEM.

    What is God Like!

Hebrews 1:1-3 God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the Prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. And He is the Radiance of His Glory and the EXACT REPRESENTATION OF HIS NATURE, and upholds all things by the word of His Power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on High, NASB

Can we know God’s Nature, His good will for us ?…………..1Corinthians 2: 9-16 tells us we can! and how and I believe God’s Truth, do you Elissa? I listen to God not fleshy worldly mankind’s understanding.

GOD’S WILL Will BE DONE HE HAS THE VICTORY!

  7. God routinely gives us things we cannot handle…the examples abound not only in this life, but in scritpure as well. I have never understood the phrase which you have done a good of debunking here. Thanks for this post and God bless!

  8. I am struggling right now and as I read this the truth of knowing I cannot handle this grief on my own, that I must rely on God instead of myself, my friends or even my children. Thank you for this powerful message, there is so much truth in it. When my head clears some more I will re read this and journal on it during my quiet time. Blessings –

    • Let me add one more thing, I know I still need my family, friends and especially my children. What is happening I am putting too much on them and myself and not relying on God. God has blessed me with more friends I thought possible, caring family and two wonderful children but I see where I need to focus on God because I can see now it may have only been a matter of time before I turned away from Him altogether.

  9. Hi Elissa, I did send this to you but it must have been blocked, God tells us to be careful and not to agree with what everyone tells us often they contradict each other, there are also false teachers and wolves or those who have been deceived, do we agree with them too for whatever reason, just to name a few who did not…. Paul , Deborah, Pricilla and Aquilia or Jesus our Lord and Saviour, they stood up for God’s Truth and it never changes nor does He, it is not study, titles, qualifications, popularity that gives us True understanding, it is Jesus as we Trust Him to teach us through the empowering of The Holy Spirit, having asked and received His wisdom and believing we have.

God tells us very clearly many, many times in Scripture that He does not do evil and deliberately hurting or afflicting someone is evil, or willingly allowing them to be, makes us accessaries by our law. God’s plans for us are good, He tells us there good and not evil and they are not to harm us, understanding the Scriptures is more then just reading the written words or knowing the History of the Bible, it’s all about knowing the heart of God.1Corinthians2:9-16

When God tells us, He will bring disaster to those who sin, He is saying they will reap what they sow, He created us this way both for good rewards, or for punishment because of us doing evil deeds, this is so we will come to our senses and repent and seek to do good by The Spirits empowering.

When we are God’s children because we Love Him we obey Him willingly, we will be strengthened, uplifted and greatly blessed by Him regardless of the tribulation, suffering and hardship we encounter in Life and Jesus said we would even be Martyred before His return and we will be hated like He was except by those who know and live His Truth or those seeking Him. We are to die to ourselves and carry His cross which is sacrificially and it’s all about His Love not our fleshy love, we must put our worldly flesh to death so we can be perfected in Love, Paul told us to aim for this, good and evil cannot co-exist, we can’t choose evil and be filled with the Holy Spirit and also have God’s seed or Nature 1John3:9 and The mind of Christ.

Also we cannot Love and Trust God with all our being if we think He is going to hurt us even if we sugar-coat it, or will we really believe that He will help us when we think it was Him who hurt us or willingly allowed it in the first place, this is what we see in Job, he was willing to accept everything was from God but we know now who hurt him and why, we remember Job did not have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit so God had to reassure Him after his friends caused him to doubt .

When we ask God to keep us from hard testing, we are asking Him to help us by the empowering of The Holy Spirit as we choose His will to walk faithfully with Him in Love and obedience until we are perfected in Love, when we will always do so, as Paul did and other early Christians who were perfected.

    • It did go to spam, so sorry! I haven’t check the box yet. 🙂
And yes we shouldn’t listen to wolves in sheep’s clothing. This is a horrible thing! As for God, he is a good, loving God, I agree! And I have to say, God has a plan and purpose for all that He does and all that He allows. Jesus said, “Not my Will Father But your Will.” Therefore Jesus was sent to the cross to die a horrible death for our sins. Satan crucified him, God allowed it and did not stop it. God does not cause the bad things, Satan does, but he allows them to happen. All things are under his ultimate control. For He is the Alpha and Omega and He knows the beginning from the end. And one day, during the end times, in the Book of Revelation, he will pour our his wrath on the Earth and when he does, his children will be spared from that. 🙂

  10. That’s very strange Elissa, I will report it to WordPress, they can work out why, they must track it, when I checked again with the other comments on a few other Blogs they were posted finally but my Security did block an attack from your Blog but there hasen’t been any more latley,

It seems you missed my explanation of what happened in the Garden, very different than what many think but confirmed in Scripture as you will see if you read them in reference to this time, also when we read the end times as confirmed in Revelation, we can see what it means by God’s wrath.

I found Darrell’s message recently a wonderful blessing with much Truth, I’m sure you would be blessed with having the same heart focus, as you shared …. .As for God, he is a good, loving God,

    • Great insights Anne!! 🙂 And Yes, I got the explanation in the Garden and Jesus did say, Not MY [Jesus’] Will…., but then said, YOUR Will Father, he wanted to let the this cup pass from him, however, He knew Gods will was best, and it was better than his, and he knew the ultimate goal of salvation because He and God are One. Therefor he went to the cross. 🙂 Never the less he said, NOT MY [Jesus’] Will. 🙂 Again Satan and our sin caused it and Satan put him on the cross, not God, God just didn’t stop it from happening. For God is not the creator of evil and suffering and in the end he does promise good things will come from such situations. (Romans 8:28).

God allows things to happen for His reasons, whether or not we understand them. Above all, however, we must remember that God is good, just, loving, and merciful (as you said). Often things happen to us that we simply cannot understand. However, instead of doubting God’s goodness, our reaction should be to trust Him. ”Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6).

I believe we agree my friend. “)

And thanks, I’ll check out Darrell’s message. 🙂

  11. I think there is a lot we agree on Elissa, especially that God is a God of Love and as I shared in the comment about the Garden, we need to understand what God’s will was as shown to us in the Parable I also shared and the reasons why Jesus was in such anguish, He Loved us greatly as He did even His enemies but to be separated from His Father broke both their hearts, their Love is so great and yet so it is for us, it flows over us in the blood of Christ… Father forgive them, they know not what they do and they killed Him and so did we our sin cause all He suffered.

I know I’m forgiven but I have shed many tears for how much I hurt Them both and grieved The Holy Spirit before I came to True heart repentance. I never take lightly the great sacrifice they both made for me.

    Christian Love – Anne

  12. Great post! I’ve never believed that saying that God would never give us more than we could handle (on our own); if that was true, there would have been no need for Christ to suffer and die and the word Grace would be meaningless.

  13. Hi Elissa, I felt the need to share again with you because you have raised a question that many ask in their heart even if not in their head and it is good for us to seek to resolve any differences seeking God’s Truth not man’s understanding. For years I believed as a lot of others do because I could not see, or hear, I was in darkness as we all are before our eyes and ears are opened to God’s Truth and Hid voice in it, I even sent people e-mails and Power points that were in error by those who wrote them, including a few on my own, I can’t change that but I can share God’s Truth now .

Lamentations 3: 33 For He doth not afflict willingly nor grieve the children of men.

God does not willingly cause our suffering and Grace has to do with His forgiveness not Him causing us to hurt and be in pain, one of the reasons we suffer is because of sin and cause our own punishment not God, He rescues us from it and never leaves us when we go through hard times. ( Isaiah 43:1-3 ) God Loves us and wants to heal us Spiritually, we are then able to believe He is God of Love and of the impossible and are released from whatever causes us to doubt and so then fear, we also are able to give thanks for all the good in our lives not just from the head but our heart too….yes we count our blessings. Jesus Christ died to set us free from the bondage of sin, so we would not suffer because of the evil we have done, not so we would continue to suffer and He has set us free from the bondage of sin so we can choose not to sin and no Temptation will be more then we can handle.

Luke 1:37 For with God nothing shall be impossible.

As for life, we can’t handle anything of on our own, the reason we still exist at times and can do what we do is because of God’s grace and because He has wonderful plans for us. I should have died at least 3 times by man’s reckoning and also been a Paraplegic for the rest of my life but for sure I’m still alive and the condition I was born with has disappeared, yes I still have physical problems but it is amazing how God helps me live with them and gives me relief from the pain when needed and I have no doubt He can and does do so, regardless of how He does it and what He uses. Timothy with Paul’s advice, used Medicine to help his health problems and we also have Doctors and medicine, all are gifts from God and He is the only healer and gives man wisdom to know how to use His gifts.

1 John 4:17-19 Herein is our Love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as He is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in Love; but perfect Love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in Love. We Love Him, because He first Loved us.

We live in a fallen world that The Devil controls, until we put our flesh to death and are perfected in Love, he can have a foothold because we continue to sin. But whatever Satan means for evil God will use for good, He knows we will suffer and is with us in it, we never walk alone unless we choose to, He does not go against our free will but when we accept His Truth and choose to live by it in our lives through His empowering, He will raise us up and nothing will pull us down.

1 Peter 5:9-11 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care upon Him; for He careth for you. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the Devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the Faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. To Him be Glory and Dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

Some say why does God still let us suffer and also why do we have to feel pain , how sad if we had no emotions or warnings and were icebergs or made of wood but it is our choice when we suffer or it is the consequence of living in a fallen world under Satan’s control but he will never be able to hurt us eternally Jesus protects us from every attack, man may kill the body but not the soul.

Psalm 97:9-11 For thou, Lord, art high above all the earth: thou art exalted far above all gods. Ye that Love the Lord, hate evil: He preserveth the souls of His Saints; He delivereth them out of the hand of the wicked. Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart.

God wants us to know His Love and all the good He has for us not doubt them.

Psalm 107: 8 – 9 Oh that men would praise the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men! For He satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.

Thank you Elissa for the opportunity to share from my heart with you, my head may get screwed up at times but never my Heart, like you I know without doubt God is Love and is Awesome.

    • Great Scriptures Anne!! 🙂

“Though He brings grief, He will show compassion, so great is his unfailing love. For he does not willingly bring affliction or grief to anyone.” Lamentations 2:32-33

What a great Scripture you have shared, and all of Lamentations 3 is quite amazing when you read it in its entirety. 🙂

For the Bible tells us that God is ultimately in control of everything and that nothing happens that does not fit into His overall plan and purpose for this world: “I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me. I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say: My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please. ” (Isaiah 46:9-10). Ephesians 1:12 tells us that God “works all things according to the counsel of His will”. Psalms 115:3 says that “our God is in heaven; He does whatever He pleases.” In Isaiah 45:7, God says “I make peace and create calamity” and Amos 3:6 says “When disaster comes to a city, has not the LORD caused it?” In Deuteronomy 32:39, God says “I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal: nor is there any who can deliver from My hand”. 1 Samuel 2:7-8 says “The LORD sends poverty and wealth; he humbles and he exalts. He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap.” In Exodus 4:11, God says to Moses, “Who has made man’s mouth? Who makes him mute, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Is it not I, the LORD?” Dan 4:17 tells us that “the Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom he will and sets over it the lowliest of men” and Proverbs 21:1 says “The king’s heart is in the hand of the LORD, like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes. “ God is sovereign over everything: war and peace, disease and healing, blessings and disasters, kings and paupers, evil men and saints, tornadoes and gentle rains, stock market crashes and unexpected bonuses. This is important to see because we must understand that bad things do not happen apart from God’s control. God was not sitting in heaven worried because He couldn’t do anything to prevent the 2004 tsunami that killed over 200,000 people. God is God and he is in control of all everything. He knows the end from the beginning and he allows things to happen for reasons that are beyond us. And if he doesn’t stop them, then they are apart of His will, to do according to His good purposes and plan for our life. And like you said, Satan inflicts, God lets it play out the way He see’s fit.

Great insights Anne, thanks again for sharing them! I really do enjoy them.

      • Hi Elissa, it seems you are saying God contradicts Himself and He didn’t really mean it when He tells us that…

Lamentations 3: 33 For He doth not afflict willingly nor grieve the children of men.

The same when He said that His plans for us are good not evil, and all the other Scriptures that tell us He is Love and can do No evil and that He hates it and yet you and others are claiming that He does what He hates.

I feel you need to read again my explanation in my other comments to understand what God is referring to in the rest of Lamentations 3 and the other Scriptures but let me ask you do you punish your children and cause them to suffer and have hardship when they are obedient to you, that is what so many claim about God.

God created Satan but it was Satan not God who chose to do evil, we can all choose to do evil so do we blame God for this too! evil is the absence of Love, so are you and the others claiming God is not Love, or is this what you are saying the Scriptures say. The claminity He brings is caused by ourselves He created us to reap the evil we sow as a warning to stop and He also Created us to be rewarded for the good we do and He does not punish us for doing good, that would be evil. Everything God created is good and 1Corinthians13 and Galatians5 show very clearly what His Nature is like. God is Love and can do No evil.

I used Lamentations3 because the Lord lead me to do so right from the start, do you really think I have not read it all, or the other Scriptures without understanding, I have been waiting for someone to read the rest of the Chapter.

When we read Scripture we can’t just read the words and claim we know God’s heart, it’s only by God’s wisdom and the empowering of The Holy Spirit that we can understand His good will for us 1Corinthians2:9-16 and when we do, we understand His written words and they have Power and are Life changing, yes God can use them to convict us of His Truth even before we have His wisdom but our understanding comes from Him not mankind.

Christian Love from us both – Anne

      • Scripture doesn’t contradict itself. And when you read Lamentations three in its entirety you’ll understand that. And if you read all the Scriptures I left you above, they go quite well with Lamentations. And I believe I explained my belief well, both in the post and in many responses I have left in my posts. I feel no need to do that again. And I understand your view. I have listed many verses and you have listed many. You have to put them all together, you can’t discount the verses I have listed and ignore them and only see a one sided picture. For God does have good plans for us, which is why he turns things around for the Good. He makes good situations out of bad events.
God allows things to happen when he does not stop them from happening. He knows the end from the beginning and he knows what is good for us. You can’t tell someone who has lost a child that “God didn’t allow this.” God knew it was going to happen before it happened, and He could have prevented it but didn’t. God chose not to intervene. Therefore he allowed it. Is He purposefully inflicting as you put it? NO! But God knows good will come of it, so he allowed it. And never once did I say or imply God purposefully inflicts his children like he gets some kick out of it! You should know me better than that.

The sad part is there are many Christians who teach God is only love, God is so much more than that! This is a huge reason the seeker friendly churches have come about. They preach a one sided message of Love and Grace. Leaving out everything else. You have to take the Bible as whole. You can’t make God a one sided God.

If you don’t agree with this post, I feel we need to once again agree to disagree. I’ve stated my point well with Scripture to back it up. There is just simply not enough Scripture to back it up any other way.
Love you my Sister in Christ.

      • Very True Elissa I’m thankful we agree, God does not contradict Himself, nor does The Holy Spirit say one thing to one person and something different to another when there is a difference, there are no contradictions in Scripture only error in Translating and understanding.

But I never agree to disagree Elissa, it is disobedience and ends in separation as we can see with all the different Denominations and Cults and their different Doctrines, which Paul warned against. I do what God asks us to do which is to reason together with His Truth not argue about fleshy man’s understanding and He will show who is in error, not you or me , He tells us we are to be in Unity (see below )

1 Corinthians 1: 10 -11Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

Philippians 3:14-16 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you. Nevertheless, where to we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us mind the same thing.

2Corinthians 13:11Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in Peace; and the God of Love and Peace shall be with you.

1 Peter 3:7-9 Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:

Philippians 4:2 I beseech Euodias, and beseech Syntyche, that they be of the same mind in the Lord.

Philippians 2:4-6 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

Philippians 2:1-3 If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of Love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same Love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.

Have you allowed your Children to suffer willingly Elissa ? did you watch them hurting and feel no grief ? do you know what the rod of correction really is ? it is not what some think, violence brings violence, abuse and fear. I’m thankful for God’s Loving correction, because it brought me to my senses but it was not pleasant to reap what I sowed till I did, the same when as a child I was naughty and had time out, I did not enjoy being alone and I also did not appreciate God telling me I was sinning, through a few of my friends, when I didn’t accept His warning in the Scriptures.

A Bible study Leader told Ron and me that everything that happens to us good and bad is by the hand of God, I asked her did God plan and willingly allow me to be molested 5 times by 5 different men from the age of 3 till my teens and raped by the last one, who was a Doctor when I was not yet 15 after he aborted my Baby which he told me was nothing more then a chooks egg, even though I was over 4 mths pregnant, did God plan for me to loose 6 more Babies because of internal damage to the eggs so the embryo did not form properly but then He tells us, everything He created was good including the womb and eggs, did He also send my babies to hell as some claim……. and she said yes He did evil to bring good out of it, the Scriptures tell us this is slander even to say it about other Christians…. Ron said lets go and we never went back.

I do not believe in a God that willingly allows evil, I explained why He does not stop all evil now, to recap He is patient not wanting anyone to perish, if He stopped all evil as we talk now Elissa, you and I would be sent to hell as we are both not perfected in Love yet but He is patient giving us time, we are saved by Grace but we are working out our Salvation, meaning showing that it is genuine and as we see the evil around us we are warned to fear it’s hold and to reject it not to accept it but that does not mean God plans or willingly allows evil to force us to obey He does not want puppets but our willing submission in Love and for Love.

It is God not me who tells you Elissa That He is Love and that Jesus is the exact representation of Him, in other words Jesus has The same seed or Nature, They are One with The Holy Spirit in The Godhead or Trinity as They are called today, so then please show me the Scripture that confirms Jesus does or allows evil, He did indeed show righteous anger but that was against evil not for it.

1 Peter 4:12-13 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery Trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: But rejoice, in as much as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when His glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.

As for the difference between a Trial and Temptation, we will be tested by Satan, he has that right as we see with Job but it is not by God’s hand and Satan cannot take our Life until the appointed time, God knows our Destiny and allotted the time we would need, including as Christians to do His good works. We will be Tempted and go through Trials but in them we can see God is with us and for us, and so we rejoice in this not the suffering and we give heartfelt thanks that we do not go through them alone, He promises to keep us strong to the end and He keeps His promises.

Christian Love Always Elissa, if I didn’t care I wouldn’t bother but I Love you in The Lord you are my Sister.

      • 1 Corinthians 1: 10 -11 “Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.”
What a great Scripture! If we don’t agree to disagree then there is division, which is what I am trying to prevent. I believe God will reveal it to you in time. And I leave it at the door of God to open your heart to His Wisdom. I can pray. This is what we are called to do. God will do the revealing. You on the other hand, keep pushing on something I have already proven wrong to you, yet you just fail to accept it and keep pushing an unBiblical view.
And Once again I NEVER said God purposefully brings evil, like you keep implying. I said he can chose not to intervene, if you don’t understand that I can’t say anything further.
And you can’t make your own god. You have to keep God as He is! You can’t say, “My God would never allow that.” In effect what you are doing is making your own God, not the God of the Bible. God is the God of the Bible, not the god we make Him out to be of our own accord. In a sense you are creating your own god, putting him in your box, and saying this is what MY GOD is like. Taking parts of Scripture and only halves of them and forming a god around it. You have to take the whole of Scripture and put it all together.

My question to you is, can God stop things from happening or not? The answer is yes.
And God did allow Job to go through the situations Satan put him through. God was aware, God let it happen. That’s a fact, you can’t change. You can mix the words as you trying, and claim other things, but none of your points proved solid. In the end Scripture wins out. God didn’t do the evil, nor did He stop it in Jobs life. But the great part is God never left him nor forsook him, nor does he with us.

And yes there are some things we bring upon ourselves, I’ve listed that in many of my posts. We sow what we reap, I agree!

I don’t have the time to present to you my entire theology, I have four children, and things to do. If you would like to know more about me, read my posts, my views are exposed in them. I also recommend reading Francis Chan’s Book, “Erasing Hell.”

And my friend, I care for you also, this is why I tell you, and I believe once is enough. I don’t like pushing it until you come to my side. This is just arguing, which I’d like to prevent. I have known since the first post from you, you weren’t open to hear others view, you have already formed yours and this is where you stand. I have heard you, and I’m glad to hear your side. Scripture says, “Not to argue.” Thank you for taking that into consideration and thank you once again for stopping by.
        Always Elissa

  14. I would add that there is a difference between a trial and a temptation. A trial may purify the Christian, but we must not allow a trial to become a temptation because it can, and it will if we allow it. It is the temptation that God provides a way for us to exit it, and we can fight it. The trial on the other hand may be allowed by God for a variety of reasons.

  15. Dear Lisa, This is the best explanation of this misconception that I’ve ever read! I just looked it up myself recently while writing a post…we Christians need to be so careful… in ministering to people…what we say MUST be Biblical!! This is a great post!! I’m going to reblog it on mine!! God Bless!!

  17. When I was struggling as your friend was, people would encourage me with the verse you’re debunking. I had many of the same issues (except we left an abusive husband)…and there were four kids. I was unemployed at the time. Their words, instead of bringing comfort, made me very angry with the kind of God who would bury me under all this stuff…and make the way out impossible to find.

THANK YOU for setting this straight!

    In Christ,

    Praise Jesus!

  18. Your words have clarified issues for me in a very heartening way. Yes, we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. When we are faced with afflictions and problems beyond our endurance, God is there to strengthen us and make things better if only we allow him. God bless you 🙂

  19. Great post! We often use cliches without ever thinking about them or how they impact people’s view of God. There are many other cliches used, like this one, that come with good intentions, and don’t actually help those who are in pain.

One small clarification: A few times above you said “God will not tempt you with temptations you can’t handle”. Based on the verse you quoted above however (1 Cor 10:13) its important to clarify that God is not the one tempting us. The verse says “he will not let you be tempted”. God does not tempt us to sin otherwise it would be pretty messed up system. Satan would be the one doing that.

  20. Hi Lisa
I enjoyed your take on God won’t give us more than we can handle. It is only through trials and temptations that our Faith is developed and made stronger.

Jas1:2-4 state ‘My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing’. Our trials and temptations should bring us closer to God, and to make us stronger in the Lord.

Ac14:22 tells ‘Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God’.

Often times, God uses trials and tribulations to purify and to perfect us! 2Co3:18 states ‘But we all ..are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord’. We are changed into Jesus’ image by the trials we overcome with the help of His Spirit!

Thank you Lisa for the wisdom God has given you! I find your posts on Before It’s News fascinating!

  21. Hi Lisa, thanks for your excellent and Scripture based post. I just had that statement repeated to me about God not giving me more than I could handle. I’ve heard it many times through much suffering! Today I realized, hey that’s not Scriptural and decided to do a bit of research, stumbling across your blog! Love, love, love this!! Will be sharing it!!
